Properties

Chamomile is one of the oldest known medicinal herbs and is successfully used both as a tea and as an essential oil. It has a distinctive, sweet, apple-like fragrance the can be quite intoxicating.

Chamomile essential oil has a strong soothing and calming effect on both the body and mind. It is non-toxic and non-irritant, and gentle enough to be used by the very young and fragile.

For babies, use (1% dilution) to relieve colic, diarrhoea, stomach pain and the irritability that comes with tiredness and teething.

It contains azulene, a powerful anti-inflammatory agent that gives the oil its characteristic pale blue colour. This makes it ideal for use in a cold compress for any condition where there is inflammation, whether internal or external. It can also be used in a hot compress on boils, abscesses, infected cuts and tooth aches or abscess (only until you can get to the dentist!).

For digestive problems use chamomile essential oil in cold compress or gentle massage to relieve colic, gastritis and diarrhoea. Bear in mind that these conditions are often caused or aggravated by stress and anxiety and chamomile not only works on the physical symptoms but also the emotional ones. It can also relieve the pain of rheumatism, headaches, migraine, neuralgia, and muscular aches.

Chamomile can also be used in cold compress or massage to relieve period pain, fluid retention and irritability

If trying to make a choice between Lavender and Chamomile oil, it is suggested that chamomile should be used where pain is more dull or aching and lavender where it is sharp or piercing.

Its properties make it extremely useful in skincare, where it can ease eczema and related conditions where the skin is dry, flaky, irritated or reddened. For the skin, add to a fragrance-free cream or lotion or use a couple of drops in the bath. It can also be added to shampoo, conditioner or a rinse to bring out the blondness in fair hair and calm an itchy scalp.

One more, less well know, property, is its ability to cause small blood vessels to constrict. This makes it useful for easing redness in the cheeks, although the effect needs to build up over several weeks or months rather than there being an instant improvement.
